The Greeks already developed the first crane types

The monumental buildings of the Middle Ages, which are still visible today, show that even then heavy and large blocks of stone had to be lifted, sometimes to great heights. Thus it was often Greek architects who constructed the first types of cranes.

Today's portal crane got its name from its gate-like construction. This type of crane can also be easily moved on the ground by means of a gear train. The crane spans its working area like a gate or portal, hence the name portal crane. Stable supports can lift and move very high loads and if the load bridge does not extend beyond the supports, no counterweight is necessary.
